New Super Mario Bros. Wii
The Wii’s New Super Mario Bros. is a grand experience that reminds you why Nintendo is so great at what they do. Mario sticks to his roots with the Wii.
This version is a side scrolling 2D action game that warms up the hearts of every person that ever owned an original Nintendo. The game is tough, but they did a great job of balancing the fact that you can get 1ups by the truck load. The original sound affects and music from the older games is what adds to this wonderful Mario experience.
The main attraction to actually even play this game is its added functionality of multiplayer action. In all the other side scrolling Mario games, players are forced to play one at a time. In the newer version players can play with up to four players on the screen at the same time. There is no online game play, which I found to be a huge disappointment. To much surprise, the game does deliver the local multiplayer aspect with first-class excitement and difficulty. The Wii controller is held in a classic style, turned side ways. There is minimal use of the motion controller in this game.
Mario and friends bring a ton of old and new content that blend well in the Wii’s version of Super Mario Brothers. For example, there are new suits like one with a propeller on your character’s head that lets you fly into the air for a few seconds at a time. There is also a winter suit that shoots ice balls like the way fire balls are used with the fire costume. The stages are well themed and show off that there are a variety of levels with a mix of old and new content. There are a ton of secrets scattered through out the stages and some that were actually in the original Super Mario Brothers game.
In conclusion, the Nintendo brings yet another part of history back to life with Mario in its original format. The little use of the motion controller helps to keep the game solid and doesn’t add any unnecessary movement like some games force you to with the Wii. This game is a must have for any player that remembers what really started in all back in the 1980’s, for newer players the game is definitely fun to play with friends and family.
